Over 55 men win first round match

Written by Bobby Kerr

HELENSBURGH'S Over 55 mens team were in action at the weekend against Milngavie in the West of Scotland Over 55s Knockout Tournament.

Alastair Hope and Ian James playing at 1st couple had a marathon opening set taking it all the way to the tie break, winning it 7-6.

By their own admission they relaxed too much in the second set losing it 6-3. The pair soon got their act together and took the deciding set 6-4.

It was a similar story on court 2 where Bill Ram and Keith Love had a very tight match, winning the opening set 6-4.

The second set could have gone Helensburgh’s way, but the visitors used the lob and slow pace just at the right time and broke Helensburgh at 4-4 and going on to take the set.

Bill and Keith knew they had to come up with a different strategy and changed tactics of out lobbing their opponents which worked a treat as they took the deciding set 6-4 to clinch a 4-2 victory for the team.

The team meet the winners of Wooden or Rutherglen in the next round.

The annual club championships are now underway with a slimmed down version of an open event and an over 55s event. Finals day is Saturday October 30.

A welcome entrant is Steve Losh who is playing his first championship for a number of years. He partnered Bobby Kerr in the mens doubles, and they beat the father and son pair of Phil and Ross Hamilton.

Top seed in the singles is one of Steve’s former pupils, Fraser Fulton, who is also top seed in the doubles with partner David Reid.

Throughout September the Wednesday club night from 7-9pm is now being hosted by Ian James, one of the club’s coaches. Ian is on hand to offer hints, tips and advice to members in a group of individual basis.
