Tough tie on new courts

Written by Bobby Kerr

HELENSBURGH Tennis Club mens 1st team travelled to Glasgow’s west end to play Hillhead last week. The club has new artificial clay courts and this coupled with the fact that their hosts currently sit at the top of the division, the boys knew it would be a difficult tie.

At 1st couple, Fraser Fulton and Stephen Lewis got off to flyer bagging the opening set 6-3. Hillhead came back strongly and took the next set 6-4, but Fraser and Stephen moved up a gear and took the final set 6-3.

Second couple Phil Hamilton and David McCowan were outclassed 3-0 as they could not match the consistency of their opponents.

At 3rd couple Bill Ram and Bobby Kerr struggled in their opening set and lost it 6-3. They got their act together and were serving for the second set at 5-3. However they could not find the winning shots to convert the set and eventually lost it 7-5, then went on to lose the final set 6-2 to make the final score a 7-2 defeat.

The men’s 2nd team travelled to Nuffield Milngavie where Bill Ram and Philip Charman narrowly lost 7-6, 6-3, 7-5. Stephen Humphreys and Iain MacLaren (pictured) lost their opening set 6-1 and almost took the 2nd set but narrowly lost it on a tie break. They were determined to get something from the night and took the final set 6-1.

Keith Love and Paul Clifford made too many mistakes in their opening two sets but came back to get a set 6-4, making the final score a 7-2 defeat.

The ladies 2nd team were at Giffnock where Carol Bews and Morag Cawley at firsttcouple won their first two sets 6-2, 6-4. The final set was also going their way but a late comeback saw their hosts take it 6-4.

Joanna Crumless and Sue Macrae at second couple won their first set easily 6- 1 but lost the next two sets 6-3, 6-4.

It was a case of mixed fortunes at third couple where Jackie Hunter and Janette Howieson lost the first set 6-0 but came back to win the next set 6-4. It was neck and neck in the final set but a break of serve saw the pair go behind and they eventually lost the set. to make the final score a 5-4 defeat.

The 1st ladies 60+ team, playing their last match of the season, had an easy win against Hillhead 2. Jackie Hunter and Gay Black at 1st couple won 6-0, 6- 1, 6-1 and Janette Howieson and Fiona MacLaren won 6-1, 6-2, 6-0.  The team finished an impressive third in the division.
