The team’s only defeat during the season was to Titwood who finished two points behind them.
At 1st couple, Liz Wylie and Gay Black had to dig deep in their opening set as they trailed 4-2, but they came back to force the tie break which they took 7-3.
Their opponents came back strongly in the second set taking it 6-1, but Liz and Gay threw everything into the final set to take it 6-2 with a combination of Liz’s deep groundstrokes and Gay’s volleys at the net.
At 2nd couple, Carol Bews and Morag Cawley took their opening set 6-3, but almost lost the second but for a great comeback from 5-4 down to win it 7-5. The final set went Hillhead’s way 6-3 but the victory and the title was secured.
In their final match of the season, the ladies 4th vets team played host to Titwood. Fiona MacLaren and Anne Esson were in great form winning 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 against a very tough pair.
Jane Carroll and Barbara Gillies fought hard to win their opening set, eventually taking it in the tie break. They took the next set 6-2 but their opponents finally wore down Jane and Barbara to take the final set 6-3.
The men’s 1st vets team play their final match this week against Newlands. A decisive win will keep them in the division — so all to play for.
Junior coaching commences next week with red and orange classes on Monday and orange, green and yellow classes on Wednesday. Details can be found in the downloads area of this website.
