Another family double

Written by Bobby Kerr

HELENSBURGH Tennis Club’s annual senior championships finals got underway on Saturday, and Fraser Fulton held on to his mens singles crown as did mum Katie who won the ladies singles.

Fraser was up against fellow 1st team player Kevin Stephen who narrowly beat David Reid in an epic semi-final. David had two match points but failed to convert them, and Kevin took full advantage to book his place in the final.

Fraser was in great form in the opening set winning comfortably 6-3. Kevin came back in the second set taking a 3-2 lead but Fraser’s sheer power of shots and determination came through as he took the next four games to win 6-3.

The ladies event was a repeat of last year’s final where reigning champion Katie Hope was up against Alison Fotheringham. Once again the power and experience of the former Scotland internationalist was too much for Alison and Katie won in straight sets.

In the mens doubles final, Fraser Fulton and David Reid were up against veterans Alastair Hope and Bobby Kerr.

Alastair and Bobby have around 16 double titles between them and recently won the district veterans tournament, but they were up against younger fitter legs and they could not produce the power they once could and succumbed to the youthful pair in two sets 6-3, 6-4.

In the ladies doubles Katie Hope and Alison Fotheringham were up against Liz Wylie and Suzanne Marshall. Katie and Alison won the opening set 6-3 but lost the next set by a similar score leading to a thrilling final set.

It was neck and neck with all four players holding their serve until the ninth game when Katie and Alison got the vital break.

Alison managed to hold her nerve with a series of accurate first serves allowing Katie to intercept at the net. Liz and Suzanne tried to change tactics with deep lobs but it was too little too late and Katie and Alison secured the title with a crisp volley from Katie down the tramline.

Katie and Alastair Hope won the mixed double beating David McCowan and  Alison Fotheringham, Alastair beat Matt Mackie in the mens over 55’s singles, Jackie Hunter beat Janette Howieson in the ladies over 55s, Matt Mackie and Clive Charters beat Andrew Morison and Keith Love in the over 55 mens doubles, Janette Howieson and Ann McKelvie beat Suzanne Marshall and Elspeth McLean in the over 55 ladies doubles, and Jane Carroll and Andrew Morison beat Janette Green and Maurice McIntyre in the over 55 mixed doubles.
