District Vets contest doubles

Written by Bobby Kerr

HELENSBURGH Tennis Club hosted the 2018 District Vets Tournament on Saturday, and it attracted players from all four local clubs.

The round robin event produced two group winners who went on to play each other in a final.

In the men’s event Kirktonhill’s Alan Barbour and Andy Bone were clear winners as was Helensburgh’s Phil Hamilton and Bobby Kerr.

In the final Alan and Andy got off to a great start breaking Bobby’s serve in the opening game, and went on the lead 3-1 before Phil and Bobby broke back to level the score at 3-3.

With Phil serving, the seventh game went to ten deuces as Andy saved game point seven times, but eventually Bobby and Phil got the winning point to claim the game.

Phil and Bobby were now in the driving seat, and they went on to break Alan’s serve and take the match.

In the ladies event Craighelen’s Sue Black and Susan Bell comfortably won their group, as did Alison Fotheringham and Judith Reilly.

The Craighelen ladies used all their experience to dominate the final from the start, and despite Alison and Judith putting up a brave fight it was Sue and Susan who came away winners.

The entry fees will be split into four and donated to a charity of each winner’s choice.
